Top athletes at Mamamaratona

Several well known foreign and Portuguese athletes will be competing in the 10th edition of Mamamaratona Race for Life in Portimão on October 10.

The main aim of the race is to raise funds to build Casa Flor das Dunas, a residential building to be constructed in Faro which will be used to support cancer patients while receiving radiation treatment in Faro (see Algarve Resident September 10 edition).

Among the athletes participating will be António Fortunato, who won more than 100 national titles in his career.

Also present will be the Portuguese regional and national champion in various age groups António Silva, who participated in four European Championships and three World Championships, winning several silver medals, the most recent in June 2006 at the World Veterans championship in Puerto Rico.

Another figure from Portuguese athletics who will be there is Carlos Cabral. He was the 800 metres national champion in 1970, 1972, 1977 and 1978, and won the Gold Medal of the 1,500 metres and the silver medal of the 800 metres at the European Championships Veterans.

Veteran of many national and international races, Daisy Dowse ran in several half-marathons but in 1983 she competed in her first marathon and put Portugal among the list of finalists in the Millennium Marathon in New Zealand.

Dutch indoor specialist Elly Van Hulst will also be at the event. She won the gold medal in the 3,000 metres in 1988 Seoul Olympics and held the world record for 12 years.

Chairman of the Regional Health Administration of the Algarve Rui Lourenço and Portimão Mayor Manuel da Luz are expected to attend, in a demonstration of support for the Algarve Oncology Association (AOA) and its projects to fight breast cancer.
