FARO POLICE seized 6.4 tons of hashish in Tavira recently, signifying one of the biggest confiscations of this particular drug in Portugal since the start of the year.
According to information given to Lusa news agency, the apprehension brings the quantity of hashish found in the Algarve since January to a staggering 15 tons. In September alone, 4.1 tons of hashish was seized in the Algarve. In addition to this, 3.5 tons were found in Lagos in April and a ton was confiscated in Vila Real de Santo António in March.
According to the Polícia Judiciária (PJ), the drugs seized last week came from North Africa and arrived in Portugal by boat. Following the police operation, four men, aged between 26 and 49, were detained, of which one was Portuguese. The detainees are in prison awaiting trial.
