Administrative charges for drivers who have unpaid tolls have seen debts soaring through the roof. In some cases a bill of €80 has increased to €1,800, and thus consumer watchdog DECO is being inundated with complaints.
According to news reports this week, already over 130 Portuguese drivers have lodged official complaints through DECO, while 300,000 Spanish drivers are simply refusing point blank to pay outstanding toll charges.
