Thursday’s Covid bulletin records lowest number of deaths in Portugal since October

Today’s Covid bulletin has recorded the lowest number of deaths (28) in the last 24-hours since October 2020. New cases are well below 1,000 (+830), numbers in hospitals and ICUs continue to fall; recoveries remain strong (+1,654 in the last 24-hours). But it’s still clear that transmission is greatest in the Lisbon Vale do Tejo region (+376 new cases, as opposed to numbers in the Alentejo of only +5) – and experts are still sounding warnings. After health director Graça Freitas’ warning of a ‘new escalation’ of the virus in the months to come (click here) and warnings from WHO Europe, epidemiologist Manuel Carmo Gomes insists: “Portugal is not free from a 4th wave”, as the Rt (transmission) index has been slowly rising, even though it remains below 1 for the time being. “This means we are reactivating the number of contagions”, he told SIC television today.
