A previous winner in the Algarve and current title favourite Jay Price took his second chequered flag in as many races this year at the UIM F1 World Powerboat Championships GP of Portugal in Portimão on Sunday.

The American led home a Qatar Team one-two with Team Abu Dhabi’s Thani Al Qamzi taking third place.

After Saturday’s qualifying, Marit Stromoy had become the first woman ever to take pole position at a World Championship race, but the Norwegian pilot’s joy at her achievement proved short lived as her mid-air clash with American Shaun Torrence while vying for the lead was the most spectacular crash of several which littered the 42-lap Arade circuit over the weekend.

Following Doha and the Algarve, St Petersburg in Russia will be the venue for the third round of the world Powerboat Championships in July.
