Three killed as Air Force plane catches fire during take-off in Montijo

Three people were killed and another is said to be seriously injured after a Portuguese Air Force C130 plane caught fire today (July 11) while attempting to take-off from Montijo’s air base 6.

Another three people are said to have been aboard the plane but their condition is being “evaluated”, according to media reports.

Firefighters were called to the scene 20 minutes after midday.

Witnesses said there was an explosion followed by a fire, national news agency Lusa reports.

A cloud of smoke is said to still be visible from the north bank of Tejo river.

The Air Force has not yet provided any details about the accident.
