Three Portuguese fishermen were rescued yesterday (November 9) after their boat capsized and sank off the coast of Culatra island (Farol), 2km south of Olhão.
According to CMTV, the crew was busy setting octopus traps when the swell apparently overturned the ‘Ebenezer’, plunging them into the water. The men managed to hold onto the boat until help arrived, having sent out a distress call.
Maritime authorities set off from Olhão’s new lifesaving station and the men were brought to shore in good shape, though they were taken to Faro Hospital “as a precaution”.
The ‘Ebenezer’ was left to sink, with naval authorities saying it will not pose a danger to maritime traffic.
