The desperate toll of drownings continued through last weekend, with three people drowning in three days: a 57-year-old woman in Póvoa de Varzim on Friday, a 26-year-old man in Amarante on Saturday and a 45-year-old man in Viana do Castelo on Sunday. At the same time a body, believed to have been that of a man, was discovered 25 nautical miles off Santa Maria island in the Azores. For now there is no information on the possible identity of the body, although adventurer Jean-Jacques Savin went missing earlier this year while attempting an Atlantic crossing single-handed. His last known position was described as “midway between Madeira and Azores”.
