Three deaths, 22 serious injuries on Portugal’s roads over Easter

Three people died and 22 were seriously injured in accidents on Portugal’s roads over Easter. The GNR’s special operation over the holiday period also saw 180 drivers arrested after testing positive for ‘criminal levels of alcohol’ in their blood, and almost that number again found to be driving with excess alcohol in their systems. In total, the number of accidents came to 676 – and the number of tickets (fines) handed out came to 3,873, the vast majority of which (2,371) were for speeding. Despite all the campaigns that run, 96 drivers were fined for using their mobile phones while driving. The fatalities occurred in Braga, Vila Real and Monforte.
