Three Algarve restaurants among world’s Top 1000

The Ocean (Porches), Vila Joya (Albufeira) and Henrique Leis (Almancil) are the three Algarve restaurants included in La Liste, a ranking of the world’s 1000 best restaurants.

The list also features three other Portuguese representatives: Belcanto (Lisbon), Fortaleza do Guincho (Cascais) and Il Gallo d’Oro (Funchal).

Placed highest is Ocean (102nd), run by Chef Hans Neuner at the Vila Vita Parc resort in Porches.

“We’re absolutely delighted to have been awarded this prestigious gastronomic listing, positioning our two-Michelin-starred restaurant Ocean alongside the very best dining experiences in the world,” said Kurt Gillig, the resort’s general manager.

Portugal’s second top-ranking eatery is Belcanto (155th) led by famous Portuguese chef José Avillez, followed by Vila Joya (184th) and Fortaleza do Guincho (305th).

Il Gallo D’Oro places at 374th while Henrique Leis sits at 819th.

At the top of the list is Guy Savoy in Paris, France, with Kyo Aji in Minato, Japan taking second place and Le Bernardin in New York, USA taking third.

According to its official website, La Liste is an “algorithm-based aggregator of food guides and reviews” created by France’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs which claims to “craft the perfect ranking of the world’s best restaurants”.

It pulls together reviews from almost 400 guidebooks, newspapers and online sites from TripAdvisor to the New York Times and the prestigious Michelin rankings.
