Over 7.800 people have signed the petition to reopen recreational fishing immediately – on the basis that it is as ‘safe’ and socially-distanced a pastime as you could hope to find in the context of the ongoing pandemic. The issue here is that many families ‘rely’ on this activity to be able to eat. The petition, stressing the psychological benefits of fishing, adds that if sport is not allowed to return soon, it could be putting hundreds of business that support the sector at risk, “and consequently send thousands of people into unemployment”.
