Thousands of euros worth of medical equipment stolen from hospitals

Over €400,000-worth of medical equipment has been stolen from two hospitals in Porto and Barreiro, leaving dozens of patients waiting for much-needed exams.

PSP police began investigating after the endoscopy equipment was reported missing on Monday morning (November 16), reports Correio da Manhã.

The thefts are believed to have happened over the weekend when the endoscopy units are closed.

There was no evidence of a break-in at either unit, with equipment stolen totaling €400,000. Police suspect the thefts were carried out by someone who knew the units well or had access to them.

According to CM, authorities will now analyse video surveillance footage for leads.

Barreiro Hospital has told the newspaper that it is trying to find a solution that will “allow the unit to start working again by the end of the week”. The CUF Hospital in Porto did not want to comment.
