The ‘big banks’ operating in Portugal are going to ‘reduce thousands of workers this year’, reports Jornal de Notícias this morning. It is a “process that has been ongoing since the last crisis but which in 2021 will hit a new peak”. BCP Millennium and Santander Totta are particularly cited, with the former already contacting “every member of staff who wants to leave presenting conditions of rescission (starting straight away with values in terms of compensation)”. BCP’s intention is to reduce staff numbers by at least 1,000 this year. It has admitted it will resort to “unilateral measures”. Syndicates are organising protests and ‘demanding’ negotiations.
