Thieves steal valuable exotic zoo birds

news: Thieves steal valuable exotic zoo birds

Thieves who raided the Lagos Zoo in Barão de São João carried off five rare and exotic birds worth in the region of €10,000.

Two pairs of vividly coloured blue and yellowmacaw parrots and a fifth with red plumage were snatched from their cages after the robbers had scaled a telegraph pole to gain entry into the zoo park in Quinta Figueiras, Medronhal, in the early hours of the morning.

The theft is being investigated by the nature protection force (SEPNA) of Portimão GNR.

The zoo owner has confirmed that all of the stolen birds have microchips for the purpose of identification.

The zoo houses a total of 600 animals of 120 different species. Not surprisingly, exotic ‘birds of paradise’ can command high prices.
