EVEN HOLY places are not safe from the recent spate of robberies in the centre of Portimão as thieves broke into a church on Monday night and stole 300 euros from the collection boxes.
They made a hole in the side doors after they were unable to force the lock. Their attempts to rob the collection boxes fixed to the walls were unsuccessful, however they still managed to steal 300 euros from the stand alone boxes.
Câmara President Manuel da Luz has expressed concern over the events. He said that he would call a meeting with police forces, business owners and the Portimão Junta da Freguesia to decide on an action plan to better patrol the streets and protect businesses.
Shops have been mostly targeted by the thieves and police are convinced that the robberies are being orchestrated by the same group of individuals.
