“You will never be able to cast it” was the reaction that Chris Winstanley received for his idea to direct and stage the play Daisy Pulls It Off written by Denise Deegan.
The Algarveans Experimental Theatre Group’s autumn production, which premiered last night (Thursday) and is being repeated tonight (Friday) and tomorrow night at the Lagoa Auditorium from 8pm, required not only several adults but at least six teenage girls to be cast.
Undeterred, Chris contacted the head teachers of a number of schools in the Algarve which led to two three-hour auditions to which over 25 teenagers attended.
“My audition panel was amazed at the talent and energy we saw and we resolved to re-work some of the play to give more of the young people an opportunity to experience acting,” Chris told the Algarve Resident. Set in the 1920s, the play tells the story of Daisy Meredith who is the first scholarship pupil to attend Grangewood Schools for Girls. The story follows Daisy through a series of adventures which adds up to a classic family adventure.
