The ‘spirit’ of regeneration

The wild strawberry tree, which produces the fruit used to distil the famous Portuguese liquor medronho, could provide the solution for the regeneration of the scorched soil left by the fires which ravaged large areas in São Brás de Alportel and Tavira.

This is the view of Jorge Santos, a professional agronomist (an expert in the science of soil and crop production) who is a member of the teaching staff at the Escola Profissional da Sertã. He says the burnt cinders would provide ideal natural fertiliser for the growth of the medronho trees and the regeneration process could be achieved in a reasonably short period of time.
