The sounds of Easter

PORTIMÃO’S IGREJA Matriz is the setting for a special musical celebration this Eastertime, with the Orquestra do Norte performing Mozart’s Requiem Mass tonight (Good Friday, April 14) at 9.30pm. The church concert, entitled The Sounds of Easter, closes Portimão council’s 2006 music season, which this year has been dedicated to Mozart, unquestionably one of the greatest composers of all time.

Orquestra do Norte will be conducted by maestro José Ferreira Lobo and the concert will also feature a choral group of four soloists, soprano Dora Rodrigues, mezzo-soprano Margarida Reis, tenor José Manuel Araújo and baritone José Corvelo.

Orquestra do Norte has performed more than 2,000 concerts all over Portugal, as well as many in Spain and France, and is enjoyed by an average of 50,000 concertgoers every year.

Music will also be ringing out in Alvor this Good Friday with a performance by the string septet of Orquestra do Norte taking place at Igreja Matriz de Alvor, at 3.30pm.

Both concerts are free.
