Registering the beneficial owner is mandatory for all established entities in Portugal or those who wish to conduct business here. All companies, associations, foundations, corporate entities, civil societies, cooperatives, funds or trusts must have their beneficial owners registered through an electronic form, where they must provide enough information, precise and current, about them.
Managers and administrators can perform this registry, as well as people performing equivalent services — lawyers, notaries and solicitors — and it is authenticated with a cartão de cidadão (national ID) or a digital mobile key. For active, existing entities, the first statement must be done from January 1 during the following times: entities subject to commercial registry, from January 1 to April 30, 2019; while other entities must do so from May 1 to June 30, 2019.
