Between 1580 and 1640 Portugal formed part of the Kingdom of Spain, a period referred to as a time of “Babylonian Captivity”.
The period of these 60 years, which saw some Portuguese support the Spanish King and others impatient for the end of his rule, also saw public building works increase in importance in Portugal.
During the next talks by the Algarve History Association, Peter Booker will be discussing the political difficulties which faced the Spanish kings of Portugal and the displays of this Philippine architectural heritage which can still be seen today.
The first talk will be taking place today (Friday) from 11am at the Municipal Library in Tavira and the second will be held on June 21 from 6.30pm at the Convent in Lagoa, admission €2.
