Tour of the Algarve

The most colourful month of the year has arrived!

February will be another event-filled month in the Algarve with much to see and do, but the spotlight will be on the several colourful Carnival parties that will be held throughout the region.

For those who might not know, Carnival, or “Carnaval” in Portugal, is a colourful festival that sees towns all over the country holding huge parties including street parades and masquerades.

The town of Loulé hosts one of the biggest Carnival parties in Portugal. This year’s celebrations will be held between February 23 and 25, although many other Carnival events will take place across the region throughout the month.

Between February 19 and 23, the Algarve will host the 46th Tour of the Algarve (Volta ao Algarve) cycling race, which attracts thousands of people as well as some of the best cycling teams and cyclists in the world.

In a bid to promote its uniquely delicious oranges, Silves will be hosting its fourth Mostra Silves Capital da Laranja – a fair which features dozens of exhibitors promoting the region’s oranges, wines, sweets and gastronomy – between February 14 and 16.

The Algarve’s contemporary dance festival Entrelaçados is also taking place in February, with seven performances and four workshops due to take place between February 7 and 16 in Portimão, Silves and Lagos.

For those who like to stay active, the Algarve Bike Challenge will be taking place between February 7 and 9 in Tavira, while Ponta da Piedade, the stunning coastal spot in Lagos, will host a new running challenge called Trail da Ponta da Piedade on February 23.

Last but not least, a play by Lavrar o Mar that provides an insider’s look into the production of Monchique’s famous Medronho liquor – Medronho – Teatro nas Serras e nas Destilarias – will take place between February 7 and 9 and February 14 to 16 at the town’s heliport.

Information on these and other events can be found in ‘Guia Algarve’, a guide in Portuguese and English launched every month detailing what is going on in the Algarve (click here). The physical guide is also distributed for free at Faro Airport, hotels, travel agencies, rent-a-cars and golf courses.
