A “Magical Santa Fayre” is taking place this Saturday (November 29) at the Galo e Touro (Cock and Bull) Restaurant in Almancil from 10am to 3pm. Organisers hope the day will be “magical”, particularly for children, and an opportunity to raise funds for The New Goldra Dog Sanctuary.
There will be stalls selling crafted goods, from organic soaps and aromatherapy oils to hand-knitted woolly hats, etched glassware and handmade cards … not forgetting the Glühwein to get everyone into the Christmas spirit. Bags of sweets and magic Reindeer food will also be available for sale, along with some Goldra goodies, including its 2015 calendar.
Other activities include a raffle with several Christmas-themed prizes, a ‘name the dog’ competition, a ‘guess the weight of the (rum-laden) Christmas cake’ competition and a children’s Tombola.
Children will be well catered for with a talented face painter and a nail specialist on hand to transform little angels into elves and princesses.
The major attraction for the children, however, will be Santa’s Grotto. Not only can the children visit Santa in his magical grotto and have their photographs taken, they can also see him on his sleigh journey, when he makes his way from the heart of Almancil (from Apolónia supermarket) at 10am to his grotto at the restaurant. He will be arriving at 10.30am to start distributing smiles and presents.
On the day, event organisers, who are also working with The Birch Foundation on behalf of the Pirilampos children’s orphanage, will be collecting donations for a ‘shoebox appeal’. Boxes should be labelled with the age and sex of the child it is suitable for.
Gift ideas include toys, toiletries, books, games, jigsaws and sweets. The orphanage has children of all ages up to 18 years.
Coffee, mince pies, drinks, snacks and a full lunch menu will be available in the restaurant during the day.

Meanwhile, The New Goldra Dog Sanctuary is hosting a Christmas Party on Saturday, December 13 at the Galo e Touro restaurant in Almancil, as a thank you to those who have supported shelter throughout the year.
All are welcome to attend, whether they have adopted, fostered or sponsored a dog, volunteered or helped raise funds.
There will be a three-course dinner menu (including water, wine and coffee) and music by Bruno Mariano and Kiss FM’s Mark Sebastian to dance the night away. Price is €35 per person.
There will be no fundraising activities on the night but organisers welcome donations of dog food and treats “to give the dogs a special Christmas”.
