The future of Portugal

Dear Editor,

I am a British expat and so cannot vote in the upcoming elections. Even if I could, I have not the slightest idea who I would vote for.

As always in Portugal it seems there are only two possible winners – PSD or PS. The path of austerity or the adventurous rebellion against it. Stability against change.

PS would certainly be the winners had it not been for the whole Sócrates’ fiasco and his legacy of leaving the country in shambles. That’s where the coalition seems to have the upper hand – it put Portugal back on its feet, despite making some tough decisions which certainly won’t be forgotten so soon, especially by pensioners and the unemployed.

Honestly, I think it’s going to be a very close call. And the result will likely define the future of Portugal in the next few decades, no matter who wins.
