The best of Fado comes to Algarve

Fado lovers and those interested in becoming familiar with the Portuguese music genre, recently recognised by UNESCO, will have the chance to listen to some of the best Fado singers in Portugal as they will be performing at Portimão’s first Fado festival this month.

Ana Moura, Carlos do Carmo, Carminho and Cuca Roseta will be taking to the Portimão Arena main stage on December 9 and 10, promising to delight audiences with traditional Fado singing during the festival that aims to recreate the Lisbon Fado scene.

Visitors will not only be able to listen to some of the best voices of Fado in Portugal but also try typical gastronomy, with Lisbon’s charismatic Fado eateries such as Tasca do Chico, Tasca da Madragoa, Mesa de Frades and even the local Cervejaria Lúcio all be present at Portimão Arena to serve a special menu for the event.

Ana Moura and Cuca Roseta perform on the Friday from 10pm and Carlos do Carmo and Carminho on Saturday at the same time.

Amateur Fado performances, called ‘Fado Vadio’, can be heard from 6pm each day on the secondary stage.

Meanwhile, Quinta dos Vales in Estombar has organised an event combining traditional Fado music with wine and culture on December 10 from 9pm.

José Praia, playing his Portuguese guitar, will be sharing his rare collection of songs and stories collected over a lifetime of travel across Portugal as a singer and performer.

José Praia lived in Coimbra immersed in the full mystic ambiance of serenades and the time of consolidation of Fado, gathering unforgettable Fados and stories.

The artist was not bound only to the traditions of Coimbra and has been collecting songs from various regions of the country.

An audience of 60 people will have the chance to hear José Praia and his Portuguese guitar while tasting some of the wines produced at Quinta dos Vales.

Tickets, costing €18 (including welcome drink), can be purchased from Quinta dos Vales (Estombar), or Artes Barricas (Porches).
