The Algarveans are off to the races!

Horses and big hats

After a busy two months of rehearsals, set building and publicity, the cast and crew of “Ladies’ Day” are finally approaching the finishing line. The Algarveans theatre groups is hoping to entertain audiences and raise funds for local charities during Lagoa’s Humorfest with their spring production playing at the Carlos do Carmo Auditorium from March 21- 23.

A splendid set has been built for the backdrop to the comedy about four fish-filleting ladies from Hull.

For Pearl, Jan, Shelley and Linda life is one long, hard slog, but could their fortunes change when they head to Ladies’ Day at Royal Ascot? Factory hairnets and overalls are replaced with fascinators and frocks as they hit the races for an unforgettable day out. Secrets are spilt with the champagne and friendships are tested. But if the ladies’ luck holds, they could hit the jackpot – and more besides…

Excited to be taking the reins as director for the first time with The Algarveans is Angela Theobold, who chose the play for its northern humour. “Ladies’ Day” by Amanda Whittington promises to deliver the warmth and laughs of “Calendar Girls” and “The Full Monty”, with all the charm of “Dinner Ladies”.

Angela has gathered a cast of fresh faces and experienced members and brings many years of stage experience to the production. She is also thrilled with her set building crew who have risen to the challenge of recreating both a fish-packing factory and the enclosure at York racecourse.

So, race and get your tickets. The odds are looking good for an evening of great entertainment in a state-of-the-art auditorium. “Ladies’ Day” is sure to be a winner and have audiences chuckling!

Tickets can be bought online at or in person at Auditório Carlos do Carmo, Convento de S. José in Lagoa and at Lagoa’s Balcão Único. Tickets are also available at Worten and FNAC shops or online from their websites. More info:
