The latest production from The Algarveans Experimental Theatre Group, “Going Dutch” by John Godber, is expected to be “one of the best”.
The play’s director Melanie Winstanley said: “Judging by the reaction in rehearsals and the amount of laughter we are having at the script, I think this will be a very funny play.”
The play tells the story of Mark and Sally who are travelling on a North Sea ferry to Amsterdam to celebrate Mark’s 50th birthday at a Bruce Springsteen concert. All is not happy in their relationship as Mark is not the success he wants to be and Sally feels neglected and lonely, and the journey across to Holland does not make things any better.
For one thing, their old friend Gill is travelling with them and arouses conflicting emotions in Mark, who has always had a soft spot for her. Gill has brought along her rough and all-too-ready new boyfriend Karl, who knows a little too much about Amsterdam’s seedier side.
From these beginnings, John Godber has created another salty comedy which deals with quite a few adult themes.
“We took a long time choosing this play as it is definitely not one for children. John Godber comedies deal with real issues with believable characters who have you laughing one minute and thinking the next. I would certainly say it is different to anything we have done before,” said Melanie.
One of the stars of the play Debbie Gaines, who is normally backstage for the Algarveans, liked the play so much she is returning to front stage for the first time in quite a few years and plays the part of Sally.
“Sally is a really great character to play and whilst I am extremely nervous about getting back on stage after all this time, I am loving working with Melanie and the rest of the team,” said Debbie.
The play will be performed at the Lagoa Auditorium from November 27 to 29 at 8pm. Tickets at €10 are available online at [email protected] or by calling 913 723 611, 966 211 634 or 282 496 635.
