The 27

By: EDUARDO OLIVEIRA COSTA

Eduardo Oliveira Costa is a journalist and publisher of several newspapers across Portugal. He is on the board of several organisations, is president of a football club, and has a keen interest in the press, among other media, and the business environment.

I THOUGHT the conclusion drawn from an opinion poll that guaranteed that most Portuguese people do not know how many countries make up the European Union, among other things, was somewhat exaggerated.

At least I thought it was, but I don’t anymore!

Out of curiosity I decided to dedicate some time to ask the same questions to a few people who are culturally ‘above average’. To my complete surprise, there are in fact very few people who dedicate themselves to knowing about these things!

Europe spends many millions on trying to make its citizens take an interest in and know more about what concerns them. This does not seem to be very successful.

I have a suggestion: ask some famous musicians to create songs whose lyrics teach people these things. It is likely that this investment will get good results!

I am sure that a song by the Portuguese singer Quim Barreiros entiled “The 27” would certainly stick in everyone’s memory!

Even if Quim changed a few lyrics to: “The 27 idiots of Europe” instead of “the 27 countries of Europe” and silly things like that!

As our wise people say, “if you cannot beat them, join them!”
