Anyone who was leaving it to the last minute to take advantage of the government’s tax amnesty will have found themselves out of luck today (December 19) as the STI union of tax workers has mounted a three-day strike.
Talking to Público newspaper, STI’s Paulo Ralha said the timing was specifically to show the “absolute necessity” of tax workers and had been organised to cause “maximum impact”.
Not a move to endear tax office staff to the general public, Público set out the reasons behind the strike as centred on recent government cutbacks in the number of tax offices up and down the country.
The strike, which will continue into Friday and affect Monday too – effectively shutting down tax offices until after Christmas – will not alter the Friday deadline for the end of the government’s tax amnesty, Rádio Renascença reported today.
