Weekend weather: Sunny days, freezing nights

Temperatures to drop below zero as Portugal hit with polar blast

All of mainland Portugal will be under ‘yellow alert’ until 9am on Wednesday due to a major cold spell which will see temperatures plunging below zero in some parts of the country.

The worst of the freezing weather is expected in central, northern and interior regions where snowfall will be a very real possibility, according to Portugal’s sea and atmosphere institute (IPMA).

Snow could also fall in the Algarve and Alentejo, where minimum temperatures could plunge to just 4ºC and 1ºC respectively. This will be most likely on Wednesday, when rain is expected in the two regions.

The bout of freezing weather is being caused by a “polar air mass” which has made its way down to Portugal, a spokesperson for IPMA has explained.
