Tejo bursts banks in downtown Lisbon

Today’s heavy rains, coinciding with high tide, saw low-lying areas of Lisbon take on an unusual amount of water, after the Tejo river ‘burst its banks’ along Terreiro do Paço. There was no danger to life or property (this time), but the obsolete system of draining in the capital means that whenever there are heavy rains, localised flooding becomes a potential hazard. Civil Protection services have received dozens of call-outs, with orange weather warnings covering the districts of Bragança, Viseu, Évora, Porto, Guarda, Faro, Vila Real, Setúbal, Viana do Castelo, Lisboa, Leiria, Beja, Castelo Branco, Aveiro, Coimbra, Portalegre and Braga. Concerns are that high waves forecast for tomorrow could cause more flooding, particularly in the Lisbon area.
