Teenager dies “changing tyre” in central strip of Vasco da Gama bridge

An 18-year-old who had only just passed his driving test died trying to change the tyre of his Opel Corsa in the middle of Lisbon’s futuristic Vasco da Gama bridge. The horrific accident resulted in serious injuries to the driver of the BMW who collided with Diogo Manuel Caeiro. A friend who had been travelling with the youngster witnessed the whole thing from the safety of the hard shoulder.

The tragedy is compounded by the question of what the young man was doing trying to change a tyre in the middle of the road.

The fact that news reports point to his only having recently passed his test could explain the disastrous lapse of judgement.

According to a report in Correio da Manhã, the young man’s body was transported to Barreiro hospital for autopsy, while the badly injured driver of the BMW has been interned in Lisbon’s Hospital de São João.

The accident happened at 8.30pm on Sunday night.
