Teachers are carrying out a second day of strikes and several protests today across Portugal ahead of what is expected to be a larger demonstration at Lisbon’s Marquês do Pombal roundabout on Saturday, December 17.
The first round of strikes was held on Friday, December 9 and forced several schools to close throughout the country.
The protests are being organised by teachers’ union Sindicato de Todos os Professores (STOP) against the new proposed teacher placement rules. Teachers are also calling for improvements to their working conditions, from better salaries to long-awaited changes to how their years of service are calculated.
