Teachers announce new strike for October 5

Teachers’ union Fenprof has decided that October 5 – World Day of the Teacher – is the perfect time for a national protest. Explain reports, it is less than a month after schools will have returned from the summer break, and 10 days ahead of the moment the government’s proposals for the next State Budget will be presented to parliament. Fenprof wants the day to stand as a “clear affirmation by teachers in defence of their profession and in education”. The announcement follows yesterday’s State of the Nation address in which prime minister António Costa pledged €900 million to be spent on improving education over the next two years
