Lisbon taxi drivers are to receive training in public relations, tourist knowledge and English. The scheme, organised by Lisbon’s Câmara, aims to equip the capital’s cabbies with a wider knowledge of their city and the ability to serve their clients better. The initiative comes at a time when it is hoped that many tourists will be visiting Portugal for Euro 2004 and the Rock in Rio-Lisboa music festival. These two events will receive special attention in the training programme.
The courses will be classroom based and will be conducted mainly on audio-cassette. There will be 12 hours of classes about public relations, eight hours on tourist information and 42 hours of English language lessons.
Cabbies who complete the course will be awarded a certificate.
