The burden of taxation on Portuguese citizens hit a new record in 2021, reports INE (national statistics institute). The weight of taxes on GDP increased to 35.8%, which is the highest level since 1995. According to the institute, ‘indirect taxes’ are those which contributed most to the increase in taxation revenue – the most significant being IVA.
