A TAX department simulator available on the Ministry of Finances website, www.e-finances.gov.pt, was giving out incorrect information to taxpayers who were using the online system to pay their taxes.
According to the authorities, the problem was affecting tax contributors earning incomes of between 55,000 and 60,000 euros per annum, whereby they should be paying taxes on 40 per cent of their income. However, the simulator was applying taxes at 42 per cent (the highest tax bracket), which should be applied only to personal incomes over 60,000 euros per annum.
An official source at the Ministry of Finances said that “every effort was made to clear up the problem quickly”.
