Tax refund delay

TAX REFUNDS could be paid significantly later set down in the 2007 State Budget.

The move could put a dampener on summer holidays for the Portuguese, who are often known to take family breaks in August upon receipt of their annual tax refund.

Up until last year, the legal deadline for the State to reimburse IRS was June 30 to employee tax payers (phase one) and by August 31 for self employed tax payers (phase two).

Now, with the alteration to the IRS regulations, refunds could be delayed until the end of August and end of September respectively. These new dates have been confirmed by the Finance Ministry.

Despite the agreed deadlines, in recent years (2002 to 2005), the deadlines were rarely respected, with many tax payers complaining about the delay in being reimbursed.
