One of the sick wild foxes that had been spotted several times on the beach of Cabanas de Tavira has finally been captured, in a rubbish bin.
It was a group of local citizens and tourists who left some food inside the bin in an attempt to lure the animal, a tactic that was successful after several weeks of failed attempts by authorities.
The story was reported by animal rights supporter Ana Fernandes on Facebook.
Meantime, Olhão wildlife centre Rias has confirmed that the animal is now under its care.
While it is suffering from several illnesses including cachexia, mange, a high parasite load, conjunctivitis and diarrhoea, the wildlife centre says the animal’s prognosis is “favourable”.
Rias is a non-governmental organisation that survives mostly thanks to its volunteers, donations and “the kindness of everyone who helps out”. Thus the wildlife centre asks anyone interested in helping the fox’s recovery to make a donation.
