A new gourmet store selling “delicious French cheeses and the finest Portuguese organic wines” has opened in the heart of Tavira.
Tchin-Cheese is owned by Guillaume Prigent and Gaëlle Quéméneur, a French couple who have been living in the Algarve for eight years.
In 2015, they created a company to promote and distribute Portuguese organic wines in the Algarve to restaurants, bars and “a few organic grocery stores”.
However, they had been wishing “for a long time” to open their own shop where they could sell some of the fine French cheeses they had been missing, such as Comté, Camembert and Roquefort.
Their dream finally came true this month with the opening of Tchin-Cheese, a “very nice little shop” located on Tavira’s main shopping street.
“We sell mainly French cheeses, which are handcrafted, organic and made with raw milk, as well as a meticulous selection of local products, including carefully selected Portuguese honeys and olive oils, spices, organic teas, chocolate, coffee and more,” the couple told us.
Also available are “Spanish manchegos, mozzarellas, burattas and many other seasonal products,” they added.
As for the shop’s wine selection, Guillaume and Gaëlle choose to work with 15 small and independent Portuguese winemakers.
The store’s organic ethos is taken very seriously as both owners are “committed to the protection of the environment and the welfare of domestic and wild animals”.
“We have always tried to eat and drink safe and organic products when possible,” they say.
Visitors can also choose to enjoy a glass of wine, cheese tapas or even a cheese board while sitting at the store’s small but shady terrace.
As the couple puts it, “our aim is to create a friendly space that is pleasant to stop by to buy fine cheeses and wines, to drink a glass of wine or to simply share a moment with us”.
