Tavira’s ‘Flor de Sal’ wins special protection

Tavira’s hallmark ‘Flor de Sal’ has been awarded Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status by the European Commission. The decision follows a request filed two years ago, giving all the reasons why this unique brand of sea salt favoured by gourmets deserves recognition.

‘Flor de Sal de Tavira’ is harvested manually in three parishes in the borough and makes use of natural precipitation from the Atlantic.

It is unrefined, unwashed after harvest and free of any additives. Its unique level of minerals make it much more fragile than regular sea salt, meaning it dissolves quickly in cooking, giving a much sought after taste. Over the years, Tavira’s Flor de Sal has become a “must” in gourmet kitchens both here and abroad.

The EU has three classifications for the protection of agricultural products. There is protected designation of origin (PDO), protected geographical indication (PGI), and traditional specialities guaranteed (TSG). All three are meant to promote and protect the brand names of quality products.
