An association aimed at fighting poverty and social deprivation by providing food, clothes and social care for the needy has been formed in Tavira.

The Associação de Luta Contra a Pobreza e a Exclusão Social (ALCOPES) is a non-profit making organisation run by volunteers and has been established to combat “the growing economic problems the country is going through”.

It has a number of objectives in its programme – to develop communal fruit and vegetable gardens, the cultivation and harvesting of shellfish and other bivalves, craftwork, and renewable energy projects.

The concept is to educate people in self sufficiency and help them find outlets to sell their products.
