Tavira fire update – July 20, 9.14am

Around 570 firefighters are battling three fire fronts burning in rugged bushland in Catraia, Tavira.

The fire, which started at 2.10pm yesterday, was still burning out of control at 7.30am, particularly fierce in the Vale area, near Faro, and Cortelha de Baixo.

Firefighters from across Portugal, including Setúbal, Beja and Évora, are helping to combat the blaze with the support of 166 vehicles, three helicopters and four planes.

The fire has already destroyed vast areas of bushland, including cork oak, holm oak and pine trees.
