Tavira celebrated 490 years as a city on March 16. To commemorate the anniversary, Tavira Câmara is hosting a photography exhibition entitled Tavira, Yesterday and Today, which is open to the public until March 31.
Formerly called Nobre e Leal Villa de Tavilla, Tavira became a city on March 16, 1520 by order of King Manuel I, the status having been achieved due to the growth of the city and the fact that it was one of the main towns in Portugal with the highest population of nobles.
