The history behind the weaving of Arraiolos carpets will be discussed by Rachel Barnard during the latest Algarve History Talk to be held at the municipal library in Tavira on October 24 from 6pm.
Rachel first became interested in the carpets on a strictly aesthetic basis more than 20 years ago when she first purchased one. Since then she has used her academic experience as a lecturer of politics at the University of Westminster to research the subject.
The weaving of Arraiolos carpets represents a unique example of Portuguese creativity in the area of handicrafts and the origin and history of the carpets reveal a fascinating perspective on Portuguese life and history. During her talk, Rachel Barnard will be covering the history of the carpets as well as the recent threats to the conservation and preservation of this Portuguese textile manufacture.
