What do you get when you mix Mozart, theatre and chocolate? Opéra Buffa, an unusual comic opera coming to the Algarve next month.
Combining classical music, singing, theatre and gourmet food, the performance will be staged at the cloisters of the Convento de São Francisco in Faro on June 8, 9 and 10, from 9pm.
Opéra Buffa, being performed by the Belgian Laika Theatre of Senses Company and Muzietheater Tranparant, is based on Don Giovanni’s opera with music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and counts on the participation of the Algarve Orchestra and the Escola de Hotelaria de Turismo de Faro.
At Opéra Buffa, the audience becomes part of the show, with culinary delights prepared by students of Faro’s catering school being served by the actors.
Staged by Peter De Bie and Jo Roets, under the musical direction of Jan Van Outryve, the performance premiered in February in Hasselt, Belgium. In the Algarve, Opéra Buffa is part of the Movimenta-te programme of cultural events, an initiative launched by five Algarve councils – Faro, Loulé, Olhão, São Brás de Alportel and Tavira – with a view to bringing an innovative mix of cultural expressions to the region.
Tickets, costing €15 per person including the dinner, can be purchased at Teatro das Figuras in Faro, Cine-Teatro Louletano in Loulé, Olhão Municipal Auditorium, Tavira’s Municipal Library, São Brás de Alportel Municipal Gallery and the Escola de Hotelaria e Turismo de Faro.
