Swiss tourist dies in drowning tragedy

An Algarve holiday for a Swiss couple ended in tragedy when the 65-year-old wife was overcome by a strong current off the Lacém lagoon beach in Cabanas de Tavira and drowned.

Her husband, in panic, waded ashore when she got into difficulty to summon help but this beach is small, frequented by few bathers and accessible only at high tide by boat and has no lifeguard.

Only a few minutes later did the husband meet a young jogger with a mobile, who alerted the maritime police. They responded quickly and recovered the lifeless body of the woman.

The couple had been staying at holiday accommodation nearby.
