A swimming ban is in place at Albufeira’s Praia dos Pescadores after a sewage pipe burst, releasing wastewater into the sea.
A lifeguard alerted authorities at around 6pm yesterday (July 19) after he noticed “brownish-coloured” water with an “intense odour” being discharged into the sea underneath the pontoon.
Maritime police were dispatched to the scene and hoisted a red flag, effectively banning people from entering the sea.
The Portuguese Environmental Agency (APA) will now conduct tests on the water. The swimming ban will only be lifted once the water is deemed to be safe again.
