Swedish celebrations

Members of the Swedish Algarvian society celebrated the National Day of Sweden on June 6 at the restaurant Esplanada do Tunel in Albufeira.

Leif Axelsson, the founder of the Scandinavian speaking club Carpe Diem, brought a Swedish flag to the celebration and made two speeches informing the 20 guests about the tradition of Swedish National Day and the history of the flag of Sweden and other Nordic flags and finished with the singing of the Swedish national anthem.

Many of the guests at the meal are members of the Carpe Diem club, which was founded in 2005 and has now grown to having more than 200 members who all speak Scandinavian languages.

The majority are Swedes but there are also citizens from Denmark, Norway and Scandinavian-speaking  eople from Finland, Holland and Portugal.

Carpe Diem meets on the first Thursday of each month, except during the summer months of June, July, August and September.

The next meeting will take place on October 6.
