Swedish artist Moa Gallstrom at Côrte-Real

Especially known for her highly distinctive portraits, Moa Gallstrom’s paintings conjure up a whole range of fictitious characters and can be seen at a new exhibition at Galeria Côrte-Real in Paderne.

Born in Stockholm, Moa has had numerous exhibitions across Scandinavia. Now residing in southern Portugal, her quirky studies using freely brushed watercolours and tempura are immediately recognisable. With quizzical expressions and curious eyes, her portraits are far more interesting than purely representational faces.

As gallery owner Pedro Côrte-Real remarks: “In a visual sense they remind me of the intriguing characters drawn by Francoise Sagan in her 1950’s novel, ‘Bonjour Tristesse’. There are hidden personalities trying to reveal themselves through a sign or look.”

Her paintings are displayed in the gallery alongside other contemporary works of art created by more than 30 painters, sculptors and ceramicists.

Visit Côrte- Real’s pop-up gallery located above the estate agents Fine and Country in Carvoeiro.

The main gallery is signposted from Boliqueime, Ferreiras and Paderne. It is open Thursday to Sunday, from 11am until 5pm.
