Sweden win Women’s Football Algarve Cup

In a closely-fought final that went to penalties it was the Scandinavians who took the honours by beating last year’s Olympic Champions USA.

A mistake by Shannon Boxx enabled Sweden to take the lead in the 19th minute through Lotta Schelin. For the first 45 minutes, the US struggled to find their rhythm and create chances and it was the Swedes who were the more positive. With only seconds to go before the final whistle a fast flowing move involving Carli Lloyd and Kai gave Megan Rapinoe the opportunity to level the score at 1-1.

In a tense penalty shoot out, Sweden held their nerve to win 4-3. American goalkeeper Hope Solo made five spectacular saves in the final and went on to win the Best Player of the Tournament award. Denmark defeated Germany to take third place whilst Portugal finished eighth and Wales came last in the 12 team competition.
